Self-directed learning – a radical approach<\/h1><\/span><\/div><\/div><\/div>Reading time <\/span> min<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>Letting learners manage their own learning experience by deciding what, <\/span>how and when they want to learn has been a theme for some time when <\/span>talking about new learning landscapes (i.e. Linkedin learning). <\/span><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>Given this background, it makes less and less sense to try to define <\/span>exactly what and how individuals should learn from these environments. <\/span>We (trainers, managers ...) have to take the plunge, relinquish control\u00a0 <\/span>and take risks.\u00a0 <\/span>It's about learner empowerment as opposed to curated, directed\u00a0 <\/span>learning, different from the dis-empowering or controlled experience\u00a0 <\/span>many have had in school-based learning.<\/span><\/p>\nHowever, if we take a closer look at most training or e-learning within <\/span>these new learning landscapes, we see a different picture. Essentially, <\/span>little has changed: <\/span>Many e-learnings and trainings are structured in such a way that <\/span>everyone must learn the same thing, regardless of prior knowledge,\u00a0 <\/span>personal situation, needs or learning goals. They are \"pre-defined\". - (No <\/span>self-direction, individuality or empowerment...)<\/span><\/p>\nWhat could this look like if we take empowerment and self-direction of <\/span>learners seriously and radically think it through to the end? <\/span>We would put learners in the driver's seat and create learning elements <\/span>that are as agile and complex as the people in them. <\/span>We would work with momentum, not predefined learning paths. We <\/span>would connect people in such a way that they can interact, reflect and <\/span>learn from and with each other. <\/span>In particular, this would promote skills that are difficult to develop in <\/span>traditional forms of learning, such as cooperative and communicative <\/span>skills, transfer and attitude.<\/span><\/p>\nA fantastic notion or a viable option?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\nWith AppReciate we have taken the first step on a journey to help this <\/span>future come to life.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>
